GAY DETOURS THROUGH SOUTH AFRICA

Africa had eluded us for sometime, until we learnt about the Detours Gay Adventure Travel itinerary to South Africa which included Cape Town, the Winelands and Kruger National Park. The fact that Detours is a gay company was all the better and this would be their fifth time in South Africa since starting their tours there in early 2017. Cape Town is a favoured destination for international gay tourists. Additionally, South Africa has protections from discrimination on the grounds of race, gender or sexual orientation enshrined in its post-apartheid constitution and, in 2006, same sex marriage became legal. All this was a winning formula for us and the group of fifteen strangers who would soon become best travel buddies for the next twelve days.

Once a conservative, far east outpost, Singapore now boasts a thriving gay bar scene with the great majority of places to be found on Neil Road and in Chinatown. The weekends are particularly busy when locals come out and guys flock in from the Phillipines for a big night on the town. Unlike many other cities in the world, the gays bars in Singapore are increasing in number and business is booming according to the bar owners with whom we chatted. We did not have time to explore all the bars in Singapore but here is our selection of current favourites.

We have travelled extensively through the fascinating mainland and the magnificent islands of Greece and each place has its unique charm. There is one common denominator and that is the characteristic hospitality of this welcoming country. We found Skiathos just as receptive and, even at the very end of the busy season, the locals greeted us like long lost family members. This is also an island blessed with stunning beaches and great food so if it’s a relaxing, indulgent, short break you are looking for, Skiathos is high on our list of recommendations.

It was our second visit to Dubrovnik’s majestic Old Town and we were still very much enchanted by this walled city with its cobbled streets, narrow alleyways, churches supporting ancient bell towers and a feast of historic architecture, overlooking the sapphire blue of the Adriatic. Our first visit was for one day as part of a cruise itinerary and, during that brief encounter, we only had time to walk the wall and a short stop at the beach.

We have a suggestion to add to your bucket list, a visit to the stunning island of Korčula in Croatia. Described to us as a ‘mini-Dubrovnik’, Korčula has all the hallmarks of a fortified medieval city, with historic stone walls and soaring towers, it is more like a Game of Thrones movie set than real life. The town also has a 15th century Cathedral, ancient squares, narrow streets and laneways which today provide sanctuary to small, cosy restaurants and quaint shops, appealing to those with a curiosity for exquisite jewellery, unique souvenirs and fine food.
